What size should I order?

Updated: Nov 21, 2021

Because Funky Birdie Amber jewelry is all custom made-to-order to your specifications, we do not accept returns or exchanges. Therefore, it's important to order the right size!

When you order a piece of jewelry with us, the size you order is the size you'll receive - meaning, if you order a 12" necklace, the necklace will be 12" from end to end, including the clasp.

To determine the correct size for you or your child, you'll need a soft measuring tape, or a piece of string and a ruler. In a pinch, you can use a dollar bill as a makeshift ruler because it measures exactly 6 inches! Or you can find a printable measuring tape HERE! Read on to discover how to accurately measure the perfect size necklace, bracelet, or anklet.

What size necklace is right for your child, and why is length so important? Baltic Amber jewelry works by being worn against the skin. Is NOT intended for children to chew on their Baltic amber and gemstone jewelry. It is important to determine the correct size necklace to order for your child, as the goal is to be sure that they cannot roll their necklace over their chin and into their mouth. Amber is soft and will break if chewed. Gemstones are hard and will break teeth if chewed. If your child is well past the putting-things-in-their-mouth phase, this is obviously less important and length becomes a matter of preference. Using the soft measuring tape, measure your child to determine what length will be best. If you do not have a soft measuring tape, you can use a string, shoe lace or piece of dental floss and measure using a hard tape or ruler. The key is not tight but not so long that your child can pass the necklace over his or her chin and put it into his or her mouth. Keep in mind the stones themselves will add some "bulk" compared to the measuring tape. Most parents find taking the measurement of their child's neck and adding 1.5"-2" to determine what size to order. Once you have measured their neck, extend the tape 1.5"-2" and check that size to be sure you like that fit. The most popular size necklace for very young children is 12", which should fit until age 2 to 2 1/2.

Measure your baby's ankle size exactly, then add half of an inch. This will ensure a comfortable fit, but not so big that it will roll off of baby's foot.

When choosing your clasping bracelet or anklet size, measure your wrist or ankle size exactly, and then add one inch. Keep in mind that the stones themselves will add some "bulk" compared to the measuring tape, so adding the inch is to account for that. If you're between sizes, go up a half inch. We make bracelets and anklets in half-inch increments; we are unable to customize size further than that. For stretchy bracelets, we recommend measuring your wrist and adding 1/2" to 3/4" to determine size.

Sizing for these pieces is more based on personal preference. If you're ordering a necklace as a gift, we can suggest our most popular sizes:

Under 2 years: 11" to 12"

2-5 years: 13" to 15"

6-10 years: 15" to 18"

11-13 years: 16" to 19"

Teens & Adult women: 18" to 22"

Men: 24" to 28"

As always, we are here to help if you have questions! Simply send us a message and we can assist you in finding or designing the right size piece for you or your child.
